Winter, spring, summer, or fall, there’s nothing like traveling to help you hit “refresh” on life. Taking in new sights and exploring an unfamiliar place is a great way to recharge and gain a new perspective.
But, for many people, traveling also brings a concern. How do you stay healthy when you’re on the go?
We all know travel can wreak havoc on your wellness regimen. Here are some ways to prioritize proper self-care during the traveling seasons, maintain your diet and exercise routines, and return home rested and rejuvenated. (Isn’t that what vacation travel is for, anyway?)
Let’s focus on how you can take care of three pillars of health while you’re traveling: mind, body, and spirit.
Before you go, plan out the type of trip that you want. Ditch any guilt you might have about going to Paris and choosing to skip going to the top of the EIffel Tower. Make the trip your own, and spend time where you want to be. You will be happier and enjoy more of your surroundings because you made the vacation your own.
Relax Into It
A bit of pre-planning and prep are always important for a good getaway, but leave some time in your itinerary for exploration. You never know where the road less traveled may lead you!
Walking and Wandering
Exploring any destination on foot is the best way to really get to know the place you are visiting. The food and travel aficionado Anthony Bourdain famously encouraged travelers to wander around, as it gives you time to “absorb the local flavor.” It is also a great way to get in your steps for the day. Bonus workout!
Workouts on the Fly
Keeping up with your fitness regimen while traveling is easier than ever. There are plenty of workout apps and videos that can turn your smartphone into a rock star personal trainer. Using smart tools can help motivate and push you along when sleeping in, or lounging by the water, is an easier, and more tempting, option.
In addition, be sure to pack your bag with small fitness tools to maximize your workouts, such as:
- Resistance bands
- Jump rope
- Core sliders
- Small weights
Hopefully, if you set aside room in your suitcase to pack the equipment, you will be more likely to use it.

Take Time for Yourself
It can be tempting to spend all of your vacation time with your friends, partner, or new traveling pals, but taking some “me” time is essential. Booking a private room in a hostel for a couple of nights, or just taking a few hours for yourself, can go a long way toward ensuring you’re your happiest self on your trip. This is especially applicable to introverts, or those people who tend to prefer solitude.

Seek Out Inspiring Experiences
If you want to return home feeling recharged and inspired with something of a new perspective on life, seek out both down-to-earth and inspiring experiences. Find opportunities for experiences in nature, or go for local community experiences like markets, small festivals, and eateries. Whatever you do, do something, or many things, that you find super-inspiring or beautifully grounding for you personally.
Savor the Experience
Forget the perfect selfie. Remember to stay present and allow yourself to savor every moment. Allow time to simply enjoy your surroundings and take in the experiences of each day. Allow for self-discovery and observations that inspire meaningful change in your thoughts or behaviors. Immerse yourself in the delights of being out of your comfort zone and exploring a new locale.
