Confused About Medicare Coverage? You’re Not Alone

Medicare is the country’s largest health insurance program. And it’s only going to grow more important in the coming years, as millions of older adults become eligible for it over time. As a matter of fact, every single day, 10,000 Boomers turn 65, making them eligible to become Medicare beneficiaries.

So Medicare is a huge part of millions of people’s lives . . . But how do people actually feel about it?

If recent research is any indication, people are intimidated by the prospect of enrolling in Medicare for the first time, or reviewing their coverage every year.

Would You Rather Shop for Medicare, or . . .

Consider this: According to a recent survey brought to our attention by AARP, older Americans are more likely to shop for cable and internet plans than they are for Medicare.

In fact, only about 40 percent of those surveyed say that they review their Medicare plan annually—compared to 44 percent who review their cable/internet plans every year.

What’s more, according to that survey, 23 percent of seniors said they found reviewing their Medicare plan to be the most unpleasant or second-most unpleasant task they could face when choosing from a list. A list that also included “getting a colonoscopy” and “going to the dentist, for the record. So, what does that tell you about what people truly think of Medicare?

And that’s not all. Another survey from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and UnitedHealthcare revealed that:

  • More than half of their respondents “find Medicare confusing or do not understand it at all,” and “most do not understand the program’s structure”
  • 19 percent of respondents already enrolled in Medicare said they “do not know what type of coverage they have”
  • Among Boomers expecting to start with Medicare, 26 percent said that they feel “nervous” about enrolling; another 14 percent described themselves as “overwhelmed”
  • Nearly half of those surveyed reported that they “never shopped around to find the best coverage.” Another 25 percent of respondents answered that they “have not shopped in two or more years”

And here’s the thing . . . People who aren’t looking at all of their choices for Medicare are leaving money on the table!

Saving Money on Medicare

That NCOA survey also pointed out that a significant number of Medicare beneficiaries are “worried about their ability to pay out-of-pocket healthcare costs,” yet most “are not taking steps to save money on their coverage.”

In order to restore consumers’ confidence—and put more money back in their pockets—there’s a real need for more education on what options people have available when it comes to Medicare. This includes Medicare supplemental insurance.

Also called Medigap, Medicare supplemental insurance is private health insurance, designed to help pay some of the health care costs that original Medicare doesn’t cover, including copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Medicare supplement plans are considered the “Gold Standard” of coverage by most doctors, hospitals, and Medicare recipients. These insurance plans can help “fill in the gaps” in your coverage, and may save you thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket medical costs every year, all while allowing you to access specific care providers and specialized services.
