Ken Dychtwald is the head of the research firm Age Wave, which analyzes trends among the massive market of Baby Boomers in the United States. So, when he speaks about what older Americans want and need, it’s worth taking notice.
With that in mind, here’s something Mr. Dychtwald recently told the AARP, for an article revealing how Boomers are “redefining retirement:”
“Boomers want to be where the action is . . . I do think we will make [growing older] a more robust and interesting period of life than we have to date.”
That’s a simple quote, but a great one. In just a few words, it really gets at the heart of a giant cultural shift that’s happening in this country.
The Amazing, Active Boomer
Baby Boomers are more physically active, more plugged-in to technology, and more socially and economically engaged than the generations that came before them. Consider this:
- Baby Boomers and older adults make up roughly half of all consumer spending in the US
- 62 percent of adults 50 or older have helped out family members financially in the past five years
- 30 percent of preschoolers are taken care of by grandparents
- 76 percent of people 65 or older use the internet, and 55 percent get online every day
- Top leisure activities among older adults include jogging, playing sports, and working outdoors
- Baby Boomers love to travel; roughly 99 percent of Boomers planned to take at least one leisure trip in 2017, and many expected to take five or more trips throughout the year
- By 2019, Americans 55-plus will make up more than 25 percent of the US labor force
All in all, those statistics don’t paint a portrait of a generation that is sitting back and letting life pass by.
No—this is a group of people that is up for anything and ready to live life to its fullest!
As another consumer expert, Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst for the NPD Group, put it in an interview with USA Today:
“The Boomer consumer is not one to sit there and say, ‘I’m getting old and I’m going to slow down.’ When people turn 65, they’re just starting to live life!”
Finding the Right Health Insurance for Your Active Lifestyle
Every single day, roughly 10,000 people in the US turn 65 years old . . . And they need a health insurance option that is as versatile, flexible, and ready for anything as they are!
Medicare supplemental insurance may be just the ticket.
Also called Medigap plans, these are private insurance plans, designed to help pay for some of the health care costs that original Medicare doesn’t cover, like co-payments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Medicare supplemental insurance plans have come to be considered the “Gold Standard” of coverage by most doctors, hospitals, and Medicare recipients—and for good reason.
You see, even with an original Medicare policy in place, older adults can easily spend thousands of dollars each year on their out-of-pocket medical expenses. Supplemental insurance options can help “fill in the gaps” in your coverage, and defray these hefty costs.
At the end of the day, this means more money in your pocket, which is all the better for when you want to go out and truly enjoy your life goals in retirement!
